Modernisation of terrace housing

Around 150 years ago, the strong desire of many Englishmen to combine the enjoyment of private residence with living in a city, shaped the way many new town districts were created and the way they look today. The solution to build vast areas of often small, but private dwellings was quite different from the patterns of city development seen in other European countries. The dreams of single people about a self-contained house within an urban area resulted in creation of a national phenomenon.
Presently, the desire for a convenient home is still present, but is increasingly connected with the concerns about energy consumption and the environmental influence of a large number of households. According to some estimations the residential sector in the UK can deliver a 60% reduction in CO2 emissions by
the year 2050.

The aim of this work is to address this need for change by examining the history, construction and the current state of the terraced house, using a house located in the city of Coventry as an example of that type of building.
